Come on. Who doesn’t love apple pie? Who doesn’t love apple pie drizzled with a salty and sweet butterscotch sauce?? And who doesn’t love a sweet treat with minimal ingredients, minimal prep time and minimal cleaning up after?!
Well if you don’t, shame on you.
Just kidding! But really, you’re seriously missing out on this one.
This apple pie inspired slice is so simple, you’re likely to have all of the ingredients on hand already. And all you have to do is chuck them all into the same bowl, stir with a spoon and press into a pan!
I’ve made this slice twice in the last week, the first time without butterscotch sauce.
The butterscotch sauce is not essential but it only took 5 minutes to make and made a delicious addition to the slice! So why not?
It was pouring rain here last night and I desperately wanted something comforting to eat. Enter: the Apple Slice with Salted Butterscotch sauce. Yes.
I put a piece of apple slice in a mug, (yes a mug, I like to secretly eat my dessert in a mug so my kids don’t try and steal it from me. They think I’m just having a cup of tea. *insert evil laugh* doesn’t everyone do that?) warmed it up in the microwave with the sauce, drizzled the sauce over the top and added some vanilla ice cream. It gave me the satisfaction of eating a real apple pie dessert dish but with 1/4 of the effort I actually put in to making this sweet treat!
Of course you don’t have to eat it with ice cream or even with the salted butterscotch sauce. The slice alone makes a nice treat to have with a cuppa, when guests pop over or even a sweet surprise for the kids lunch boxes. (Though if eating with butterscotch sauce, it’s best eaten right away. And while still warm.)
5 Ingredient Apple Slice
2 cups of self raising flour
1 cup sugar (plus more for sprinkling on top)
Optional: cinnamon (I used about 1 teaspoon in the mix plus extra for on top)
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees
2. Peel and chop apples into small pieces and put in mixing bowl
3. Melt butter and add to bowl
4. Add egg
5. Add sugar
6. Add flour
7. Add Cinnamon if using
8. Sprinkle with sugar and more cinnamon if using
9. Mix with a wooden spoon until combined and press into prepared baking tin
10. Put in oven for 35 to 40 minutes
Salted Butterscotch Sauce
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspooon vanilla
1 tablespoon milk
Place all ingredients into a small saucepan over medium heat.
Stir continuously until butter starts to melt and ingredients are combined.
Stir over heat until mixture starts to bubble. Remove from the heat and continue stirring until bubbles disappear. Return to the heat again until the bubbles return. Take off the heat and continue stirring. Do this several times until the sugar has melted and there’s no graininess in the mixture.
You don’t want the sugar to burn, but you need it to be completely melted.
This shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.
When butterscotch is silky, remove from heat and add a pinch of rock salt or pink salt. (Or to taste)
Store in the fridge to cool and heat up when needed.
If it didn’t make me put on 5 kilos, I’d drink this straight from the saucepan.
Let me know if you end up giving this combo a try!
