No, I’m not talking about money or setting up a fund to better your child’s financial future. Though that is obviously a wise idea!
I’m talking about something even simpler than that. Something that will probably impact them for the rest of their lives.
A gift for your child’s future that costs nothing but a few minutes of your time.
I’m talking about setting up an email account in the name of your child, and emailing them weekly. Sharing with them your thoughts about them, your dreams for them, recent photos and stories. Funny things they’re currently saying and doing, moments you want them to remember and words of wisdom you want to share with them.
The idea is to then gift these email accounts to them when they’re 16.
Where they will have thousands of emails to look back on, detailing their life throughout the years and recalling fond memories that were otherwise easily forgotten.
My children are 4 and 2.
I set up an email account for both of them this week and both hubby and I have been emailing them.
In these emails I tell them they’re the joy and the highlights of my life. I tell them I’m proud of them. I tell them something funny they said to me and how it made me laugh. I tell them what life is like to them at the moment, being 4 and 2 years old.
They may be too young to understand and read the emails now, but my hope is that when they turn 16 and we gift them their passwords, they will find love within the thousands of words that have been written. They will see we have always had their back, despite the many mistakes we’ve made as their parents. They will see they have always been our priority, our blessings, our joy.
And if (God forbid) something happens to hubby or I, we can know that our children will have a piece of us in those emails. Our exact thoughts toward them.
Here is a sample from an email I’ve sent to my son, age 4:
You make me so proud I could burst! You are so sweet and such an encourager, always telling me things like “I love your dinner mummy” or “you did a great job mummy”.
You are also extremely bossy and enjoy bossing everyone around! Especially sissy.
You make me smile every day just by being you. You’ve got a silly sense of humour like daddy and I. We love to laugh together!
I love that you love to cuddle me. You always want to be close to me, wherever I go.
You’ve got such a good memory and are always reminding me of things that happened years ago, when you were only a toddler. You have an amazing mind!
You currently have a (long time) obsession with Spider-Man. Every day you want to wear one of your 4 Spider-Man costumes. You rotate them throughout the week and remind me to wash and dry them for you so you can wear the next one. As soon as you wake up, you put your costume on. As soon as we get home from being out, you put your costume on.
When I tell you you can’t do something you say “I can, because I’m Spider-Man”.
You even carry around a backpack with a Spider-Man costume in it and tell me your name is Peter Parker!
You love to shoot webs and ask me to play “The Spider-Man vs The Lizard game” with you EVERYDAY which involves me chasing you around the house, growling with my tongue out while you shoot your webs at me laughing hysterically.
I love you so much buddy. You and Sissy are the best gifts God has ever given me.
Spider-Man 4 life!
What do you think about setting up an account for your kids? Is this an idea you’d consider?
Love to hear your thoughts!
