My beautiful, Spiderman-obsessed boy turned 5 this week. I can’t believe it. (cue sobbing.)
I am so proud of him and all he has brought into our lives by just being his sweet, funny, often controlling, handsome self.
It only feels like yesterday I was in that hospital room being told he was coming out of me butt cheeks first. Yet here we are 5 years later, and those butt cheeks are still as cute today as the day he was born!
So in honour of my big boy’s birthday, we celebrated with a party this past weekend – Spidey style. But with a Hulk cake of course. (I couldn’t deny the birthday boy’s special request for a Hulk cake, as much as it initially pained me to deviate from the Spidey theme!)
I love party planning and decorating on a budget and this year was no exception. We filled the giant balloons with air instead of helium and stuck them to the wall with mounting tape. (Helium was going to cost us $20 per balloon!!) It gave the effect of floating balloons but cost us nothing.
I made the spidey banner and thank you gift tags using Picmonkey which meant I only had to pay the printing costs.
I also picked up a spider web table cloth and packet of fake spiders from the Halloween section at Party Warehouse that were on clearance. Woo!
We used Spider Web Washi Tape on the floor to make spider webs in the hallway, and also made spider web “flags” to stick in the cups of fruit we served.
The big hit of the party was the Spiderman entertainer. He arrived fully dressed at the front door and high fived all the kids on his way in before jumping right into entertaining the kids. He started with face painting, moved on to games like Pass the Parcel, made some cool balloon shapes for the kids and posed with them for photos at the end. The best thing was, Dreyson was smiling and happy in a group setting and participated in all the activities. Which is something he sometimes struggles with, particularly if he’s the centre of attention.
The other party highlights were the Spidey Spray (silly string) and the Pinata that sent all the kids scrambling to collect as many packets of gummies they could get their hands on.
All in all it was a good day and the birthday boy was seen laughing and smiling throughout the day. That’s all a mama can hope for!
Happy 5th Birthday to my amazing Dreyson! I hope all your Spidey/Hulk dreams come true this year buddy.
Next up: The Trolls/Moana/Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse/Peppa Pig party my daughter is hoping for! We’ll see how that turns out 🙂
